AP Exam Strategies Duuude✌

Here are some websites that I found will help us on the AP Test. Seek the knowledge in these rad websites!

For these next websites, this is just what you might expect on the AP Exam for English.

Jimmy Santiago's "From Violence to Peace"

Let me start off by saying that I didn't read the whole poem. Honestly I thought it was too long and got bored, however the beginning of the poem really intrigued my interest. I'm currently in 5th period and the teacher let us work on our own. The room has some talking of people close by me. I went on Poetry Foundation and looked for Jimmy Santiago. I found this speech From Violence to Peace and started cracking up on the first three stanzas. Never in my 16 years of life have I heard this type of language from an author.

Twenty-eight shotgun pellets
crater my thighs, belly and groin.
I gently thumb each burnt bead,
fingering scabbed stubs with ointment.

Could have neutered me, made extinct
the volatile, romantic man I am.
“He’s dead,”
doctor at emergency room
could’ve easily told my wife that night.
Instead, “Soak him in a bath twice a day. Apply
this ointment to the sores. Here’s a month’s supply
of pain killers.” I remember the deep guttural groan
I gave, when the doctor pressed my groin.
                  Assured
I could still make love, morphine drowsed me
and in a dull stupor I don’t remember
police visiting my bed, or laughing so hard,
they scowled for a serious answer.
I howled a U.F.O. shot me along the Río Grande,
and they cursed and left.

The fact that he has to make sure that he can still make babies almost killed me. I was choking on laughter, the girl sitting next to me right now was looking at me as if I was crazy. I LOVE THESE STANZAS! This is not little baby poetry but actual poetry. Jeez I just can't with this man!

Immigrants in Our Own Land (Discussion)

Theme: In the very beginning I thought the theme would be freedom. However continuing reading, the theme changes. I feel as though the theme is just Change.
Tone: The tone of  the beginning is hopeful/curious. Towards the end it is devastation/ monotone.
Mood: Discontent.

I skimmed through Jessica's post, yet it was very easy to understand. I agree with her on this being a poem on people coming to a new country in hopes of better things. I liked her main image on comparing people coming to a new world to prison. Re-reading the poem it does feel like prison then a new country.

Stanza 1:

  • Description of their travel to a new land i.e. doctor, papers, court, jobs
  • Jobs in different country (what they're meant for) they won't be able to do in this new country
  • The tests they take remind me of history where immigrants from Italy going to New York would need to have a painful eye exam
  • Baca states "...counselors orient us to the new land we will now live in." I feel like it sounds like school where counselors show you the new school. From the stories I've heard of my people migrating here from Mexico, the officers don't show you around. It's a double meaning of some sort.
Stanza 2:
  • Baca states again that " The administration says this is right, no mixing of cultures," I feel as though the administration is still living in the 20th century where people stay in their lanes; where this is still segregation. This poem must be around that time.
  • Low paying jobs, just like immigrants now
  • "Temporary" is a plain out lie said by administration so they can keep working
  • Rehabilitation? Prison or Migrating!?
Stanza 3:

  • Getting away to go to a new, beautiful, safe world
  • Beautiful, safe= (Reality) horrible, same as usual
  • "lives" don't matter
  • people don't care about them
Stanza 4:
  • "bars"= prison?
  • house tools (i.e. sinks, bathrooms) malfunctioning
  • clothes on lines, no dryers?
  • old days? Seems like before 1920s
  • Joey and Felipe- Two men of different race
Stanza 5:
  • new immigrants with dreams and hopes
  • Just like him back in the day
  • look down? Cell on the top?
Stanza 6:
  • explains what happens to those dreams
  • different way people cope with it
  • Many things changed since being in there
  • few make it out of here
Question: Jail, Rehabilitation center for immigrants?

AN EARTH-SHATTERING FART!

I started reading "A Sound of Thunder" at about 9pm Sunday night, and honestly I have no words for it. I'm not going to lie and say the story captured my interest. I basically had to read the sentences twice just to make sure I understood what I read. However I really did like the story. I thought it was funny how in the beginning of the story it talks about the election, "Makes you think, If the election had gone badly yesterday, I might be here now running away from the results." This was me the day I found out about our new president, yet my thought was in the opposite way.

Even though I wasn't interested in the story, I kept reading. I came across a sentence that started with ("Christ isn't born yet," said Travis, "Moses has not gone to the mountains to talk with God. The Pyramids are still in the earth, waiting to be cut out and put up. Remember that. Alexander, Caesar, Napoleon, Hitler-none of them exists.) Never have I ever heard of people talking about Christ being alive. I am Catholic and believe in Jesus Christ so reading this has shocked me. People don't like to mention religion because a lot of people get awkward or get very upset. Also, the fact that people don't express their thoughts on there being a God and if he did create us (people fight with scientific facts). Just seeing this sentence has me shocked and grinning from the diversity in writing.

Travis was a little smarty-pants when he explained the butterfly effect to Eckels. It was quite cool how he gave so many reasons on why you shouldn't alter the past. Everyone always talks about the butterfly effect yet hardly anyone gives multiple examples that doesn't involve butterflies.

Is hunting dinosaurs really cool? Hmn..

At the end of the story Travis shot Eckels because Eckels stepped on a butterfly causing the world to change. Is killing Eckels going to solve the issue?

Emerson Project

So basically my project went haywire in class. No one understood the basic idea of it. I apologize for the ideas not being exactly written down for it to be better understood. So here I am going to explain the whole brussel sprouts, farmer shenanigan.

Hardly anyone in class likes brussel sprouts, yet most have not tried them. Brussel sprouts is a sort of metaphor for ideas. (Understand guys? Brussel Sprouts= Ideas.) Because of this, we are the farmer who harvests them.

The farmer knows that people hate brussel sprouts yet he (or she!) still process them and they're still in our market. This relates to Emerson because people tell us that our ideas suck yet we should believe in them. We should be the farmer, we should trust our ideas no matter who doesn't like them.

Some people write to make something ugly beautiful, some write to leave a part of themselves to be remembered, some write to give words meaning and soul and others write to exist in nonexistence

Decades can pass. You can move countries. Wars can be fought. People can die. But the stars stay the same. They stay constant. They are really the only reliable things in life

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”

In this time of day, you are based on your actions. The person who you want to be when you're older is all depended on the things you do now. For example, we live in Santa Maria. Santa Maria has currently been a very "ghetto" place lately because of all the gang activities and murder. Now imagine  a little boy and girl whose siblings, parents, etc are in the gang business. Technically it is in their blood to join, to become a part of the family business, but that isn't fair. They have to decide for themselves to be a gang member or gain an actual profession in the working world. They weren't destined to become what their family wanted them to be , they are destined to be what they want to be.

There is also the fact that there are rude, improper people in this world. They don't have to be a bad-mannered, potty mouth, dirty person. If they choose to be nice and respectful they will become a better person. It doesn't matter if that is the way you were raised or if that's what all your friends do. If you want your kids or other people to respect you be the person you decide to be, do not be what others want you to be.

MY AMERICAN VOICE?

Speaking up is hard to do for a person that doesn't like to hurt other people's feelings. Yes speaking up for a person being bullied is a different. But actually telling someone what they're doing/ saying is wrong is a different story. For example, I act very respectful around others and don't necessarily speak rudely to others. I do happen to know people that speak to people quite impolite. Although no matter what they do I can't find it in me to speak out about it.

Other things such as cheating on a test, I do sort of speak up on it. I usually don't speak up on it at that exact moment seeing as I am a bit shy person. When all the students leave after class I speak to the teacher. Now cheating on a relationship and speaking about it is a different story. You see the person you tell all this information to will not always believe you and will tell you that you're being "fake". It usually results in the lost of a friendship and the cheater getting away with it. On the contrary, the friend will believe you sometimes and will appreciate you saving them from the vile human.

When I honestly speak up, my words are kind in a timid voice. It basically looks very innocent, yet it is innocent and caring. I try not to hurt people because I knew if I was acting in a wrong way I wouldn't like to be feeling punished, I'd rather want to have a "talk".

TEAM VOCAB

This presidential election has transformed into a battle, with venomous attacks from both aggravating parties. Hillary has remained stolid, in my opinion, and i really wanna punch Trump in the proboscis. His supporters have slowly dissolved and the ones who have remained are hypnotized into believing America will be great again. This is a melancholy moment in American History, because soon, one of these candidates will be president. I earnestly believe that neither candidate should be eligible for office.

Two gang members that "supposedly" stabbed a man were found non-guilty since they had no more proof. Although what if they did stab him? The Constitution states you can't be tried for the same trial, so basically if they did stab him they can't be tried anymore! The man had two kids and now they have no one and have no justice for him. This generation would rather kill a man for messing with their "gang" and have the man's kids in foster.

Gender Roles, Sexism Satire

This year, 2016, there are so many problems with gender roles and sexism.

Women are being judged on how they should act, how much makeup they have on, how they dress and how they behave.

Men are judged on how manly they are, how their jawline isn't on "fleek", how much of a "player" they are and how much of a "sissy/pansy" they are.

Not only this but there are still people that think a man's place is bringing home the bacon and women are here to please the men emotionally and physically. A women is not meant to work besides working at home to provide her family with meals and clean clothes/ house if not then she will be punished by her husband. A man is meant to be the head of the house. He should be the sole provider of the house and meant to keep his wife and family in check. If the man were to lose his job he should already be looking and receiving another one.

Satire Idea

I've been stuck in a "satire writing box" for the past couple of days. One side of me wants to be political but everyone makes fun of Trump and Clinton. The other side of me wants to just be very funny but that gives me no motivation. Thinking of politics made me think when Kanye West proclaimed that he was going to run for president in 2020. I might be one of the few people who dislike the Kardashians or anything to do with them. Anything to do with them meaning Kanye West too. He was high when delivering this "presidential speech" and I just can't stand for this joke he set upon us, the people. Another idea is to focus on the actual Kardashians and on how they got "famous" yet act as if they come from riches. Any help?

Response to "Conscience of a Hacker"

I think I want to change my career dream of being a business CEO to becoming a hacker...hmn...  Anyways I completely love this essay. It makes you think outside the box. It completely makes you see the brighter side of teenagers. We are not all alike, we all have different ideas on mind on life and how we do things. Although the older generation believe we are all alike. We are all criminals, we are all lazy, we all cheat, etc. This essay is more of an ice breaker. It is to break people out of their "perfect shells" and to seek new opportunities. Becoming a hacker is a new experience. "You may stop this individual, but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike."

That moment my computer works... Hope ya'll love me making a fool of myself pronouncing this tongue twisting tale that teeters on the side of insanity. Adios! (Tried to have some alliteration.) (:

A Modest Proposal

Now I've heard about cannibalism but to eat your OWN children! No! I understand the author describing how these little monsters (children) are good for nothing and just wear their mother down but this is outrageous. The more I read from A Modest Proposal the more disturbed I felt.

"A child will make two dishes at an entertainment for friends....and seasoned with a little pepper or salt will be very good boiled on the fourth day"

I don't know how I feel about this. Personally I think that this goes by so many morals and responsibilities of being a parent. However some of these people aren't parents yet they do know how to feel as a child. To even think of eating children sounds terrible and barf worthy.

"I rather recommend buying the children alive, and dressing them hot from the knife, as we do roasting pigs."

Roasting pigs and roasting children is completely different! This is some weird type of fetish that needs counseling. Maybe back in the 1700s when food was a big deal would this may have been considered but not actually acted upon.

Sorry guys but I can't deal with this child pedo fetish, sorry Mr. Author (Mr. Jonathon Swift). No hard feelings, eh?
"The Right to your Opinion" is by far very educational. I suppose I always thought that I had the right to my own opinion, meaning no one could change my mind since it is my opinion yet I can now say I'm wrong. "The right to your opinion " by Jamie Whyte actually means that you don't have the right to your opinion. Well, you do have the right but it doesn't always mean it's right. The main message of the reading was that you do have the right to your opinion but we, the people, also have the right to deny and "edit" your opinion.

So Monday August 23rd was a normal school day at first.
1. Wake up early and get ready.
2. Walk to the math building and sit in my math class.
3. After math class get breakfast and head to Dr. Preston's English class.

What I didn't expect when I got breakfast was a spoiled, rancid orange juice. What the heck school? I thought you guys made breakfast the most important part of school. I DIDN'T think that chugging down a sour rotten orange juice  would be my most "important" part of the day.

I guess it could be a fluke. Hey mistakes happen guys. BUT on this day Tuesday August 23, 2016 I write to you all out there at 8:49 am that I once again got rotten juice. Dear school cafeteria , I am done with you. Au revoir.

Saturday, August 20, 2016

Howdy guys! So happy today was a big success for the Blue Jacket Bonanza. So much fun with my FFA crew and have probably lost my voice right now by mimicking the whale noise in this video. #ICANDOIT

I died laughing reading this.

What's my Big Question(s)?

1. Is life like a domino effect? By this I mean that when one event happens does that cause something else.
3. What happens after death? I'm Catholic so I do believe, on one hand, that we do go to Heaven but on another hand I think we get reincarnated.
